Tennis legend Billie Jean King has been announced as the grand marshal for the 136th Rose Parade scheduled to take place on January 1st. The 80-year-old icon, known for her groundbreaking contributions to women’s sports and activism, will lead the parade in Pasadena next year.
The announcement was made on Monday as confetti showered over King at Tournament House, accompanied by Elton John’s hit song “Philadelphia Freedom,” written in her honor. King expressed her excitement, stating, “I’m still kicking,” with a smile, showcasing her enthusiasm for the upcoming event.
Growing up in Long Beach, King shared fond memories of enjoying parades with her mother, making the opportunity to serve as grand marshal even more special for her. Reflecting on the parade’s theme of “Best Day Ever!” she remarked, “I love it… It reminds us of living in the present every single day,” encapsulating the joyous spirit of the occasion.
King joins an esteemed list of past grand marshals, including Olympic champions and sports icons. However, she stands out as the first female athlete to hold the prestigious position on her own, a testament to her trailblazing career and advocacy for gender equality and social justice causes.
With an impressive record of 39 major championship titles, including 20 Wimbledon victories in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, King’s impact on the sports world is unparalleled. Recently receiving a bronze statue at Cal State Los Angeles and the Congressional Gold Medal for her advocacy work, she continues to inspire and lead by example.
In addition to her sporting achievements, King holds ownership interests in the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Angel City FC women’s professional soccer team.
