An Italian artist, Chiara Camoni, has captivated audiences in Dumfriesshire with her first exhibition in Scotland. Renowned as one of the leading Italian artists of her generation, Chiara chose to showcase her latest collection at the Cample Mill gallery near Thornhill. The gallery, once a row of millworkers cottages, is now managed by an independent arts organisation called Cample Line. They offer a public programme of international contemporary arts, including exhibitions, screenings, workshops, and events.
The exhibition, titled ‘murmur, buzz, hiss and rub’, features over 30 unique works by Chiara, ranging from monumental pieces to intricate creations. Included are three new works, two of which are ceramic pieces made using clays and soils sourced from Cample and nearby villages. Visitors can view the exhibition from Thursday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm, or by appointment.
Chiara drew inspiration from local species around Cample, such as spiders, frogs, and other creatures that inhabit the area. Her art reflects a deep connection to nature and craftsmanship, incorporating materials like herbs, berries, flowers, and various types of clay and ash she collects. The exhibition showcases a diverse range of works, including sculptures, drawings, and a new film titled ‘Burning Sister, 2024’.
The exhibition also features a short essay by independent curator and academic, Cecilia Canziani, providing further insight into Chiara’s artistic practice. Chiara’s work spans across different mediums such as drawing, printing, video, and sculpture, with a focus on ceramics. Her pieces have been exhibited in numerous shows across Europe, including the ongoing Manifesta 15 in Barcelona.
