‘I made six figures on eBay – one simple tip will earn you the most money’

An entrepreneur who achieved a six-figure income as a teenager through eBay sales has shared his top advice for making substantial money on the online auction platform. Joseph Holman, the founder of Green Doors, managed to purchase his first Porsche with earnings from eBay, accumulating over £250,000 in his teenage years and earning the moniker ‘the eBay king’. Holman has now disclosed the secrets to success on eBay as a side hustle, imparting valuable guidance on listings and enhancing profitability.

Holman’s eBay journey commenced at the age of 12 when he utilised his father’s account to sell ‘stick and ball’ games bought in bulk with his pocket money. He quickly made a profit of approximately £2,000 within six weeks, sparking his passion for buying and selling a variety of items. By the age of 16, he had saved around £30,000 from eBay profits annually, boosting his income to £20,000-£30,000 per year through side hustles. Acquiring a moped at 16 facilitated deliveries and item collections, leading to the purchase of a car at 17 and escalating his earnings to £50,000.

By the time he turned 20, Holman had generated over £200,000 solely from eBay sales, trading items ranging from soaps to statues, baths to bikes. His key strategy for maximising profits on eBay is listing items under ‘Buy it Now/Best Offer’, enabling a quick purchase process and potentially securing higher prices. Emphasising the importance of presentation, he advises taking quality photos and videos of items to showcase them comprehensively.

Holman also stresses the significance of an effective eBay title, prioritising relevant keywords and maximising the available space. Recommending comparing retail prices and displaying savings in listings, he highlights the ease of selling on eBay and the potential to earn more per hour than the average wage. Despite the removal of private seller fees, Holman believes promoting sustainable practices through fee differentiation between new and second-hand items would be more beneficial.

Holman’s success story serves as inspiration for eBay sellers, showcasing the potential to turn unwanted items into lucrative ventures. With his practical advice and insights, sellers can enhance their listings, attract buyers, and maximise profits on the platform. Aspiring eBay entrepreneurs can take cues from Holman’s experience and implement his strategies to elevate their online selling endeavours.
