Israel Urged to Cease Indiscriminate Attacks on Gaza Resulting in Civilian Deaths
In a recent publication for the Daily Record, Humza Yousaf, the former first minister, reiterates the urgent need for Israel to halt its indiscriminate attacks on Gaza, which have tragically led to the deaths of thousands of civilians. Yousaf’s plea further calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and urges the international community to intensify efforts towards achieving peace in the Middle East.
Reflecting on the events of a year ago, Yousaf recalled his condemnation of the heinous attacks carried out by Hamas, knowing the potential risks this posed to his own family members trapped in Gaza. The escalation of violence on October 7, 2023, evoked horror and revulsion worldwide. However, the retaliatory actions taken by the Israeli government have extended beyond reasonable response to become acts of retaliation, resulting in the suffering of countless innocent individuals through death, injury, displacement, and starvation.
The scale of civilian casualties in Gaza, particularly among women and children, has been alarmingly high, with reports indicating a significant loss of innocent lives. Such atrocities not only defy humanity but also hinder the prospects of a safe and secure Israel coexisting with an independent Palestinian State. Yousaf highlights the tragic case of Mohammed Abu Al Qumsan, whose family was devastated by an Israeli airstrike, underscoring the devastating impact of indiscriminate attacks on innocent lives.
While acknowledging Israel’s right to self-defence, Yousaf emphasises the necessity for all countries to adhere to international law, prohibiting acts such as targeting civilians, attacking essential facilities like hospitals and refugee camps, and obstructing humanitarian aid efforts. The failure of the international community to enforce a ceasefire and prevent further violence is a grave concern, compounded by continued arms sales to a nation facing allegations of war crimes.
Yousaf implores global allies to advocate for a ceasefire, cease arms trade with Israel, recognise the Palestinian state, and enforce international law to restore peace through diplomatic and political channels. The pursuit of violence only exacerbates instability in the region, jeopardising the prospects of peace and security for all inhabitants. As tensions persist, the imperative for immediate action towards de-escalation and conflict resolution remains vital to prevent further devastation and avert the looming threat of widespread conflict in the region.
