Labour Urges Ministers to Reverse Decision on Cutting Fuel Insecurity Fund
The Scottish Government is facing calls to overturn its decision to scrap the fuel insecurity fund, as Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar pleaded with ministers to collaborate in assisting those most vulnerable this winter. Sarwar highlighted that the UK Government’s recent move to extend the household support fund in England could potentially inject an extra £41 million into Holyrood, providing the means to reinstate the fuel insecurity fund.
The fund, which was left devoid of funding in this year’s budget, is crucial for supporting vulnerable households during the winter season and had a price tag of £30 million last year. Reinstating the fund could result in approximately 200,000 low-income pensioner households receiving an additional £200 each during the colder months, benefiting a significant portion of pensioner households receiving government support.
In a bid to alleviate the situation, Scottish Labour has put forth proposals to extend payments to low-income pensioners who do not currently receive Pension Credit, provide targeted grants and energy vouchers to those in dire need, as well as launch a campaign to boost enrollment in Pension Credit. Charities have raised concerns about a lack of awareness among pensioners regarding their entitlement to benefits, which could result in many losing access to winter fuel payments.
Despite criticising the Scottish Government’s decision to cut the benefit, Sarwar expressed willingness to collaborate with ministers to offer support to pensioners. He emphasised the importance of focusing on what measures can be taken to support the populace during challenging times, stressing the need for effective distribution of financial aid.
Sarwar stated, “Labour is providing funding to support those most at risk and we need to make sure this money gets to those who need it. Instead of focusing on what it can’t do rather than what it can do, the Scottish Government could work with Scottish Labour to make sure this package is delivered to support Scots.”
