Michael Cheika says ban for disrespecting doctor ‘hurts my reputation’

Leicester head coach Michael Cheika expressed his disappointment with the two-match ban he received for disrespecting an independent match-day doctor during a recent game against Newcastle. Cheika was prohibited from attending Leicester’s 42-10 victory over Newcastle last Saturday as a result of his actions.

Following the incident, Cheika watched the game from afar in Paris alongside his wife before she returned to their native Australia. While one match of the ban was suspended, Cheika will be back in the coaching role for Leicester’s upcoming match against Northampton this weekend.

Despite his impending return, Cheika admitted feeling disheartened by the disciplinary process, which started due to a disagreement with the independent doctor over a player substitution decision made during Leicester’s previous match against Exeter on September 21.

“I would be lying if I didn’t say I was really disappointed,” Cheika shared after appearing before the disciplinary panel last Tuesday. He added, “I felt the decision wasn’t right and it hurts my reputation. I was disappointed and I almost felt like… they don’t really want me to be in the league here because what happened is a really minor-type thing.”

Acknowledging the importance of following the process, Cheika emphasised, “I want to stand up for myself but I don’t want to disrespect the process in any way, shape or form. Mainly because I don’t want to risk getting in trouble again. […] I don’t want to give the team any grief. That’s the last thing we need.”

The written judgement from the disciplinary hearing described Cheika’s behaviour towards the independent doctor as “overly aggressive with intense eye contact.” Cheika, known for his passionate coaching style, will be looking to put this incident behind him and focus on steering Leicester Tigers in the upcoming matches.

The situation has sparked discussions around respect for match officials and the importance of upholding professionalism in sport. Cheika’s reflection on the incident sheds light on the challenges coaches and teams face in maintaining composure during heated moments on the field.

As Cheika prepares to return to the touchline, all eyes will be on how he leads his team and handles future interactions with match officials to ensure a positive and respectful sporting environment for all involved.
