A young mother from Berkshire, Jessica Lane, shared her harrowing experience after what she thought was post-pregnancy pain turned out to be a fight against an aggressive bone cancer. Jessica, 31, started experiencing pain in her upper left arm and shoulder while five months pregnant with her now two-year-old son, Theo, in March 2022. The discomfort made it difficult for her to move her arm and it was warm to touch. Despite raising her concerns with her doctor at the GP surgery, Jessica was initially told it could be related to muscular pains during pregnancy that would likely subside after giving birth. Jessica and her fiancé, Karl, welcomed Theo in July 2022, but her pain persisted. Just five weeks after giving birth, while trying to fit a car seat, Jessica heard a “crunch” in her upper arm, leaving her in excruciating pain.
After advocating for an X-ray, it was revealed that her humerus had broken under the pressure of a 13cm tumour growing on it. Following further medical assessments, Jessica was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of primary bone cancer, in September 2022. Subsequent to surgery to remove the tumour, additional growths were discovered, leading to the decision to amputate her arm in May 2023 to save her life. Jessica, who co-runs a small business with her father making chemotherapy kits for cancer patients, aimed to raise awareness about bone cancer and provide hope to others fighting the disease, emphasizing that no one has to face it alone.
Reflecting on her challenging journey, Jessica expressed her fears for her son and the heartbreak of the possibility of not being there for him. She highlighted the strength and resilience she discovered within herself amidst the adversity, underscoring the invaluable nature of life’s fragility. Jessica urged awareness of bone cancer, emphasising the need for a supportive community for those combating the disease. Her ordeal, from misdiagnosis to amputation, showcases the importance of early detection and a rigorous understanding of rare diseases like primary bone cancer.
