Netflix viewers have expressed outrage towards Pamela Bozanich, the prosecutor from the Menendez brothers’ first trial in 1993, for her controversial comments in a new documentary about the case. The Menendez Brothers documentary sheds light on the murders of José and Kitty Menendez by their sons, Erik and Lyle, in 1989.
The documentary includes phone interviews with Erik and Lyle, who have claimed they were victims of sexual abuse by their father, along with discussions involving Kitty Menendez’s family members, journalist Robert Rand, and Bozanich. After a former member of the boy band Menudo alleged in 2023 that he was sexually assaulted by José, social media platforms were flooded with calls for a retrial of Erik and Lyle’s case.
In response to the growing interest in the case on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, Bozanich made controversial remarks in the documentary, insinuating that cases should not be judged based on social media opinions. She stated, “Your beliefs are not facts. They’re just beliefs. And by the way, all you TikTok people, I’m armed. We got guns all over the house. So don’t mess with me.”
Viewers took to social media to criticise Bozanich’s threatening tone, with some calling her behaviour “disgusting” and “horrible.” Others expressed support for Erik and Lyle, believing they deserved a fair trial. The Menendez brothers’ first trials resulted in deadlocked juries, but in the second trial, they were convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to murder, leading to life imprisonment.
In a recent development, new evidence has surfaced in 2024 that could potentially exonerate the brothers. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office is currently reviewing this evidence following petitions filed by Erik and Lyle last year. A hearing to discuss the new information is scheduled for November 26.
