In a recent interview on SiriusXM with Michael Smerconish, renowned pollster Allan Lichtman, also known as the “Nostradamus of polling”, shared his insights on how an October surprise could impact the 2024 election. Lichtman, who has accurately predicted the outcome of nine out of 10 presidential elections since 1984, remains firm in his prediction that Donald Trump will lose to Kamala Harris, regardless of any potential October surprises.
According to Lichtman, the concept of an October surprise—an unexpected revelation or scandal in the month before the election— is a myth in American politics. He stated, “I have never changed my prediction in response to an October surprise because the keys gauged the big picture of incumbent governance in strength and don’t sway by the events of the campaign.”
Lichtman’s forecasting method, known as “The Keys to the White House,” was developed in collaboration with Russian academic Vladimir Keilis-Borok in 1981. This method assesses 13 factors, including the incumbent party’s standing in the House of Representatives, the state of the economy, any scandals during the incumbent’s tenure, and the charisma of the candidates. Through this analysis, Lichtman predicted last month that Harris would emerge victorious in the election.
Despite acknowledging the unpredictability of foreign policy factors which could potentially alter the current outlook, Lichtman remains confident in his prediction for a Harris win. He emphasised that even if some factors were to change, they would not be sufficient to shift the prediction in favour of Trump.
Reflecting on past instances, Lichtman noted that significant changes so close to the election are rare, citing the American Civil War as an example. However, he also acknowledged the possibility of unforeseen events altering the course of history.
In discussing the recent vice presidential debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance, Lichtman gave his assessment, grading Walz higher than Vance for their performances. With his track record of accurate predictions, Allan Lichtman’s insights provide a compelling perspective on the potential impact of an October surprise on the upcoming election.
