A recent study suggests that recycling old and unused cables could play a significant role in providing the copper required for the development of green technologies. The Recycle Your Electricals campaign is advocating for households to recycle the millions of cables that are often stored away in drawers, instead of being put to good use.

Research conducted by Material Focus’ Recycle Your Electricals campaign has revealed that UK households currently harbour a whopping 1.3 billion unused or discarded electrical items, including over 627 million cables. These cables are estimated to contain more than 38,000 tonnes of copper, valued at around £266 million. The research further cites analysis from Bloomberg Intelligence, indicating that this copper could be crucial in meeting the increasing global demand for the metal through improved recycling practices.

In another study by the Royal Society of Chemistry, it was found that approximately 347,000 tonnes of copper will be necessary for constructing wind turbines and solar panels by the year 2030. To raise awareness and encourage action, Recycle Your Electricals has launched The Great Cable Challenge in conjunction with International E-Waste Day. The initiative aims to recycle one million cables, reducing electronic waste and potentially aiding in the advancement of eco-friendly technologies.

Executive director of Recycle Your Electricals, Scott Butler, emphasised the significance of these old cables as a valuable resource that is often overlooked. He highlighted the potential of these cables to meet the demands of the technology and appliance sectors while also contributing towards addressing the current copper shortage. Butler described the abundance of unused cables in households as an “urban mine” that, if properly utilised, could have a substantial impact on promoting a greener economy and mitigating environmental damage caused by copper mining.

Izzi Monk, a policy adviser on the environment at the Royal Society of Chemistry, underscored the importance of copper in achieving sustainable energy goals. Monk stressed the need for strategic government intervention to address supply risks and promote the secondary sourcing of copper through recycling. By investing in recycling technologies and infrastructure, Monk believes that the UK can make significant strides towards ensuring a stable and environmentally conscious copper supply chain.

The call for a concerted effort to recycle and maximise the use of existing copper resources comes at a time when the global demand for this essential material is rapidly escalating. The initiatives and recommendations put forth by organisations like Material Focus, Recycle Your Electricals, and the Royal Society of Chemistry highlight the critical role that recycling can play in building a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
