Ron DeSantis ‘refused to take call’ from Kamala Harris on hurricane relief

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has come under fire for reportedly refusing to take a call from Vice President Kamala Harris regarding disaster recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. This incident highlights the growing partisan tensions that are affecting the response to the devastating storm.

According to reports, a DeSantis aide informed NBC News that Harris was attempting to reach out for assistance, but their calls went unanswered as they were perceived as being politically motivated. The White House responded to the situation by putting the onus back on Governor DeSantis, stating that it was his decision whether to engage with them or not.

DeSantis missed a call from President Biden regarding the storm due to being on a flight at the time and also declined to participate in Biden’s recent visit to Florida. With Hurricane Milton intensifying into a Category 5 storm in the Gulf of Mexico and set to impact the Tampa Bay Area imminently, tensions between the White House and the Florida governor’s office need to be addressed swiftly.

Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm with winds of 140 mph, made landfall on September 26, causing significant damage. The aftermath has seen at least 20 fatalities and nearly 1 million Floridians losing power. Despite DeSantis stating that the situation is under control and urging resources to focus on other affected states like North Carolina, the response to the disaster has become embroiled in political controversy.

Prominent Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have been accused of spreading misinformation and politicising the disaster. While some have criticised the government’s handling of the crisis, North Carolina officials have commended the White House for its response.

In the midst of recovery efforts, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis emphasised the importance of avoiding political gamesmanship and conspiracy theories that could hinder the relief operation. State Senator Kevin Corbin also condemned the spread of unfounded claims about the storm, highlighting the need for cooperation and support during these challenging times.

As Hurricane Milton looms and the impacts of Hurricane Helene continue to unfold, it is crucial for all stakeholders to set aside differences and work towards a unified response to provide aid and support to those affected by the natural disaster.
