Salmon Swim Freely in the Klamath River for the First Time in a Century After Dams Removed
For the first time in more than a century, salmon are swimming freely along the Klamath River and its tributaries near the California-Oregon border, just days after the largest dam removal project in U.S. history was completed. Researchers have confirmed that Chinook salmon started migrating on October 3 into previously inaccessible habitat above the site of the former Iron Gate dam. This marks a significant milestone as part of a national movement to restore rivers to their natural flow and rejuvenate ecosystems for fish and wildlife.
Damon Goodman, a regional director for the nonprofit conservation group California Trout, expressed his awe at witnessing this historic moment, noting that it has been over a hundred years since wild salmon last swam through this stretch of the Klamath River. The completion of the dam removal project on October 2 is a major triumph for local tribes that have long advocated for the restoration of hundreds of miles of the Klamath River. These tribes have campaigned through protests, testimonies and legal battles to highlight the environmental damage caused by the dams, particularly to the salmon population.
Moving forward, scientists will utilise SONAR technology to track the migration of fish, including Chinook salmon, Coho salmon and steelhead trout, over the coming months. This data will be crucial in monitoring the healing process of the river. Although the removal of the dams is a significant achievement, the recovery of the ecosystem is expected to be a gradual process.
Collaborative efforts between conservation groups, tribes, and state and federal agencies will involve a monitoring program to observe long-term fish responses to the dam removals. The U.S. has seen the removal of over 2,000 dams, predominantly within the last 25 years, with notable projects including those on Washington state’s Elwha River and the White Salmon River in Oregon. The Klamath River was once renowned as the third-largest salmon-producing river on the West Coast before the construction of dams between 1918 and 1962 significantly disrupted the natural flow, leading to a decline in the salmon population.
Following a bacterial outbreak that claimed thousands of fish in 2002, pressure mounted on federal regulators to address the environmental impact of the dams. In 2022, a plan was approved to remove the dams, culminating in the recent restoration of the Klamath River’s ecosystem. This momentous occasion marks a positive step towards rejuvenating the river and reinstating its status as a vital habitat for salmon and other wildlife.
