Thousands of dachshund dogs descend upon beach for ‘sausage walk’

Thousands of Dachshund dogs gathered for a delightful beach walk alongside their owners at the annual ‘Southwold Sausage Walk’ event in Suffolk. Dog lovers from around the globe came together to celebrate their shared affection for these unique breeds.

The event drew Dachshund owners from various countries, with some travelling all the way from Florida, United States to join in the fun-filled day on the English coast. Organiser Laura Baggott expressed her joy, stating, “It’s always weather dependent and luckily we had sunshine.” She highlighted the warm and inviting atmosphere at the event, boasting of stalls, music, and a raffle, making it an enjoyable experience for all participants.

Initially expected to host 500 sausage dogs, the event exceeded expectations by doubling the number of attendees. The walk, which has been a yearly tradition since 2017, made headlines in 2022 by unofficially setting a world record for the largest gathering of a single breed, with an impressive 2,238 Dachshunds joining the event.

Laura Baggott shared her overwhelming feelings upon witnessing the sea of Dachshunds on the beach and the positive response on social media. She expressed her pride in the event’s success and its growth year after year. Her ultimate goals include officially breaking the world record and erecting a statue of a sausage dog in Southwold.

Although the Southwold Sausage Walk attracted a significant crowd, it faced stiff competition from the annual assembly of Golden Retrievers in Scotland, with hundreds of owners participating. However, the record for the largest dog walk encompassing various breeds was set by Anthony Carlisle in South Shields in 2011, where a staggering 22,742 canines from 182 breeds partook in the event.

The Southwold Sausage Walk remains a highlight for Dachshund enthusiasts, offering a day of camaraderie and celebration for these beloved dogs. As the event continues to grow in popularity, it showcases the deep love and bond shared between Dachshund owners and their adorable pets.
