A parish priest in Cambuslang has received congratulations from HRH The King and Queen for being honoured as a ‘local hero’. Father Paul Morton, the parish priest of St Bride’s Church, was recognised for his significant contributions to the community and beyond. The special celebration event, held at Holyrood to commemorate 25 years of the Scottish Parliament, saw Father Morton being lauded as a local hero. The event took place on September 28, marking the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament, attended by HRH The King and Queen.
Father Morton expressed his gratitude, stating, “It was a great privilege to be at the Scottish Parliament for the 25th anniversary of its opening. I was conscious of representing many people in our area at that event. It was very good to meet so many Scottish people who are doing so much good.” The event featured performances showcasing Scottish music and culture, with MSPs nominating ‘local heroes’ from their constituencies to attend, individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities.
Clare Haughey, MSP for Rutherglen, praised Father Morton’s work, saying, “Fr Morton is at the heart of so much community work in Cambuslang and beyond. He’s a champion of social justice and equality, and truly works across all faiths and none.” The Scottish Parliament, over the past 25 years, has passed legislation that significantly impacted the lives of the people of Scotland. From the smoking ban to free prescriptions, equal marriage, and expanded childcare provision, the parliament has made a substantial difference.
Father Morton’s recognition as a local hero symbolises his dedication to touching the lives of many in the community. The event at Holyrood served as a platform to honour individuals like Father Morton, who have positively influenced their local areas. The celebration was a testament to the power of community spirit and the impact one person can have on the lives of many.
