Can Hurricane Milton become a ‘Category 6’ storm – which doesn’t yet exist?

Hurricane Milton’s potential to evolve into a ‘Category 6’ storm, a classification that doesn’t currently exist, has sparked discussions among researchers and scientists. Recent extreme storms like Helene and Milton have pushed the boundaries of the current hurricane scale, indicating a need for a new category to reflect the severity of these increasingly intense weather events.

The rapid intensification of Hurricane Milton to a Category 5 storm has caught forecasters off guard. The storm escalated from a Category 1 to a Category 5 hurricane within a few hours, raising concerns about its potential impact. The National Hurricane Center has issued warnings that Milton could strengthen further and expand in size, posing a significant threat as it heads towards Florida and is expected to hit the densely populated Tampa Bay area by Wednesday evening.

Experts, such as AccuWeather’s lead hurricane specialist Alex DaSilva, point to record-high ocean heat content in the Gulf of Mexico as a contributing factor to Milton’s intensification, likening it to “rocket fuel” for the storm. Florida officials have issued evacuation orders, with Tampa Mayor Jane Castor emphasising the gravity of the situation by stating that staying in evacuation zones could be life-threatening.

The looming threat of Hurricane Milton comes hot on the heels of Hurricane Helene, which caused extensive damage in the southeastern United States, particularly in Florida. The aftermath of Helene has been described as a “wake-up call” by officials, with the potential impact of Milton forecasted to be even more catastrophic.

The increasing frequency of rapidly intensifying storms has led some scientists to question the adequacy of the current hurricane classification system. The Saffir-Simpson Windscale, which has been in use for over 50 years, categorises hurricanes from 1 to 5 based on wind speeds. However, the open-ended nature of the Category 5 classification has prompted discussions about the necessity of introducing a Category 6 for storms with sustained winds exceeding 192mph.

Climate experts point to the warming of ocean waters due to anthropogenic global warming as a driving factor behind the heightened intensity of hurricanes. They argue that a Category 6 classification could provide a more accurate representation of the risks posed by these increasingly powerful storms, particularly in a warming world. Studies suggest that under a 2C warming scenario, the frequency of storms capable of reaching Category 6 wind speeds could significantly increase in certain regions.

While the National Hurricane Center has not proposed adding a Category 6 to the current scale, researchers stress the importance of re-evaluating how hurricanes are classified to better communicate the risks associated with these extreme weather events. It is essential to acknowledge that focusing solely on wind speeds may overlook other significant dangers posed by hurricanes, such as storm surges and flooding, which can have long-lasting and devastating effects even after a storm weakens.
