A man who battled a cocaine addiction since the age of 15 has found solace in cold water therapy, which has helped him maintain his sobriety. Lee Borthwick, now 33 years old, credits cold water therapy and a 12-step recovery programme for turning his life around after a suicide attempt led him to seek help. Reflecting on his addiction, Lee admitted that he had been using cocaine addictively from the very beginning, despite still appearing to function in society with a job and a home.
However, a pivotal moment came when Lee hit rock bottom and ended up in a psychiatric facility. It was then that he realised he needed assistance and turned to Cocaine Anonymous for support. Going through a reflective process with his sponsor, Lee confronted the consequences of his addiction and acknowledged that healing required him to confront past traumas. Today, Lee is committed to using his experience to help others in recovery.
Embracing the therapeutic benefits of cold water therapy at Ayr beach, Lee has founded Unity Connections, a group where individuals in recovery can gather, share their experiences, and participate in cold water dips. With the support of his friend Keith Murphy, the group has expanded rapidly from just three members to over 40, welcoming anyone struggling with addiction, homelessness, or mental health challenges. Lee expressed how his journey to recovery has given him a new lease on life, motivating him to assist others on their path to healing.
