Common habit could be to blame for acne and wrinkles – even if you have a good diet

A concerning link has been identified between a common habit and skin issues such as acne and wrinkles, even for those with a healthy diet. In addition to known side effects, a GP has raised a warning about the potential impact of vaping on the skin, which could worsen skin conditions. Dr. Bhavini Shah from LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor highlighted a lesser-known consequence of vaping that could be affecting the skin, including the formation of wrinkles. The doctor explained that the chemicals in e-liquids can lead to skin irritation, resulting in acne or allergic dermatitis, especially around the mouth. Furthermore, vaping can dehydrate the skin, leading to a dull complexion, wrinkles, or exacerbation of existing skin issues.

Dr. Shah emphasised that many people may not realise the negative effects vaping can have on the skin. Nicotine in e-cigarettes can constrict blood vessels, reduce blood flow to the skin, hinder essential nutrients from reaching skin cells efficiently, and contribute to premature ageing. Moreover, various chemicals in vapes can trigger skin inflammation and irritation, potentially causing blemishes and breakouts. These skin issues may persist despite following a healthy diet and skincare routine. The decrease in saliva production due to vaping can result in dry mouth and throat, increasing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Additionally, vaping may lead to gum inflammation and a higher likelihood of periodontal disease, irrespective of the presence of nicotine in the product.

The detrimental effects of vaping extend beyond lung health to impacting teeth and potentially causing severe allergic reactions. Dr. Shah mentioned that flavourings, preservatives, and additives in e-liquids can trigger symptoms like skin rashes, swelling, and breathing difficulties in some users. She warned about propylene glycol (PG), a synthetic alcohol present in e-liquids, cosmetics, deodorants, and some foods, which could cause dermatitis in individuals sensitive to it. Anyone concerned about these potential risks should discontinue vaping and seek advice from a healthcare professional promptly.

Recent data reveals that approximately one in eight adults in the UK vape, with many unaware of the health hazards associated with the practice, according to HMRC. A study by LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor surveyed 500 adult vapers and found that over two in five adults are unaware of how vaping can affect their health. As awareness grows about the impact of vaping on skin and overall health, individuals are urged to consider the potential consequences of this habit. The importance of understanding the risks and prioritising skin health alongside overall well-being is paramount in making informed choices about vaping practices.
