A dentist has issued a warning about seven crucial signs of mouth cancer that should not be ignored. Dr Ferakh Hamid from Aesthetique Dental Care highlighted that more young individuals are being diagnosed with mouth cancer without clear risk factors. He emphasized the importance of paying attention to warning signs and seeking medical help if something feels off.
One of the early indicators of mouth cancer is a persistent sensation of something in the throat that can affect swallowing or lead to throat discomfort. Dr Hamid stressed the significance of addressing this symptom early on. Changes in voice quality or hoarseness, often mistaken for common cold symptoms, could indicate more serious issues if they persist and impact speaking abilities.
Swollen lymph nodes, particularly in the neck area, should not be ignored as they could be a sign of various health conditions, including mouth cancer. Difficulty in chewing, swallowing, or speaking should prompt a visit to a healthcare professional, according to the dentist.
Earaches and headaches, if persistent or unusual, should be brought to the attention of a dentist or doctor, especially when accompanied by other symptoms of mouth cancer. Numbness in the mouth, lips, or tongue, along with discolouration, are major warning signs that require immediate medical evaluation.
Dr Hamid also highlighted that loose teeth without a clear dental explanation could be a sign of oral cancer and should not be disregarded.
