A flight to Edinburgh was forced to divert after a drunk passenger had to be restrained by fellow travellers. The incident involving Roman Pawlicki, 68, occurred on April 5 while he was flying from Poland to Edinburgh, as detailed in Newcastle Crown Court. Reports from Chronicle Live stated that Pawlicki, in a highly intoxicated state, not only had to be restrained by passengers onboard the flight but also grabbed a flight attendant’s arm. The disruptive behaviour led to the plane diverting to Newcastle International Airport.
Prosecutor Katie Spence described the events, mentioning that Pawlicki’s actions were so concerning that the flight had to be redirected. Upon police intervention, Pawlicki, who resides in Niddrie Mill, Edinburgh, was taken into custody. In court, he fully acknowledged his responsibility for the incident. Pawlicki admitted guilt to the charge of being drunk on an aircraft and received a suspended prison sentence of six months, valid for 18 months.
During the sentencing, Judge Carolyn Scott highlighted Pawlicki’s significant alcohol consumption at the airport and during the flight. She emphasised the disruptive nature of his behaviour that led to passengers having to intervene and the flight being rerouted to Newcastle. The judge also noted the distress and inconvenience caused to all passengers on board due to Pawlicki’s actions.
