Dumfries Rotary Club members recently had an enlightening experience with a presentation from Caroline Bell, the speaker from Clear as a Bell Marketing. Caroline shared insights into her role at the European Lunar Symposium (ELS), which was held at the Crichton in June. The ELS is a significant academic conference in Europe that focuses on lunar science and exploration. Participants included delegates from NASA, the European Space Agency, the UK Space Agency, and the Japanese Space Agency. The conference, chaired by Professor Mahesh Anand from the Open University, marked its 12th edition, with previous locations being Berlin, London, and Amsterdam.
Throughout the event, 127 papers were presented to delegates, showcasing the latest lunar research. Attendees also had the opportunity to relax and network during a dinner and ceilidh, as well as enjoy visits to local attractions like Crawick Multiverse and Langholm; the latter being notable for Neil Armstrong’s visit in 1972. Rick Armstrong, Neil’s son, made an appearance at the Symposium, adding to the event’s prestige.
Local school pupils participated in the Symposium, along with a careers fair highlighting diverse opportunities in the lunar sector beyond astronaut roles. Caroline played a key role as the local marketing and communications consultant, bridging communication between organizers and the media. She mentioned that the Symposium would be featured on an upcoming episode of Border Life on Border TV. Additionally, Caroline took on various tasks such as arranging transportation for delegates, booking restaurants, and creating locally sourced “treat bags” for attendees.
Caroline emphasized the importance of establishing a legacy from the successful event, paving the way for more such gatherings in the region. Rotarian Andrew Walls concluded the meeting with a vote of thanks, appreciating Caroline’s valuable insights and contributions.
The Dumfries Rotary Club members were evidently enriched by the presentation and left with a greater appreciation for the advancements and opportunities within lunar exploration and research.
