Chelsea and Nottingham Forest have been charged by the Football Association following a mass melee that erupted towards the end of their 1-1 Premier League draw over the weekend. The incident occurred when Neco Williams pushed Marc Cucurella off the pitch, inadvertently causing him to collide with Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, leading to a heated on-pitch confrontation in the 88th minute of their match at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Almost all players on the field, including substitutes, became involved in the altercation, prompting the FA to charge both clubs for failing to control their players. In an official statement, the FA said, “Chelsea and Nottingham Forest have been charged after the mass confrontation at their Premier League fixture on Sunday, 6 October. It’s alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players didn’t behave in an improper and/or provocative way around the 88th minute. Chelsea and Nottingham Forest have until Thursday, 10 October, to provide their responses.”
Cucurella received a yellow card for his part in the altercation, marking his fifth card of the season and ruling him out of Chelsea’s upcoming game against Liverpool after the international break. Additionally, Wesley Fofana was also booked and will be sidelined for the match at Anfield. Chelsea, who received a total of six yellow cards in the game, are likely to face a fine for the second time this season.
During the incident, Nicolas Jackson was seen to raise his hand towards a Forest player, but the on-field referee did not notice the action. While VAR acknowledged the hand gesture, they did not deem it to warrant a change in the referee’s decision on the field. Jackson, who was substituted in the 81st minute, will not face any retrospective action for the incident.
As the clubs wait to respond to the FA charges, the aftermath of the dramatic clash at Stamford Bridge continues to be a topic of discussion in the football community.
