Former Conservative councillor David Grant is aiming to re-enter local politics through the by-election in Falkirk South on October 17. The seat became vacant after Euan Stainbank resigned to become the MP for Falkirk in July’s general election. Grant, who previously served as a councillor in Larbert and Bonnybridge ward, lost his seat in the 2022 council elections. Despite finishing third in the first ballot, the transferable voting system prevented him from retaining his position.
Grant believes his past experience as a councillor will be advantageous in the upcoming election and is eager to engage with the community. Emphasising his commitment to addressing constituents’ concerns, Grant stated, “You can’t solve every problem, of course, but I believe I did my best.” Remaining actively involved in local Conservative party affairs, Grant is familiar with the political landscape in Falkirk and is opposed to proposed cuts to learning hours in schools and determined to tackle anti-social behaviour.
The field of candidates for the by-election includes seven contenders. The SNP candidate is Carol Beattie, a former chief executive of Stirling Council. Labour’s candidate is Claire Aitken, a native of Hallglen involved in establishing the village’s food pantry. Independent candidate Sharron McKean, the founder of Falkirk District Action Group, is also vying for the seat. Brexit campaigner Stuart Martin is representing Reform UK, while Tom McLaughlin is the Scottish Greens candidate. The Liberal Democrats have nominated Sean McCay.
Voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots on October 17 between 7am and 10pm. The diverse range of candidates and their respective platforms promise an engaging and competitive election in Falkirk South. Stay tuned for further updates on this closely watched by-election.
