I went on a cruise to find out if they really are just for old people

I embarked on a cruise to investigate whether they are truly tailored only for elderly individuals. The experience was a revelation for me, a millennial named Yolanthe Fawehinmi, as I set sail on the Mediterranean to uncover what a sea holiday can provide to younger travellers. My interest was piqued by the convenience of having everything in one location and the chance to explore multiple destinations in a single trip, inspired by my parents’ previous cruise experiences. Although the concept wasn’t entirely foreign to me and my 27-year-old sister, Ardelle, life onboard P&O Cruises’ Azura was an entirely new adventure.

For seven nights, our lives centred around the 290-metre vessel accommodating 3,100 guests and 1,250 crew members on a journey from Valletta in Malta, with stops in Taranto, Italy, Corfu, Kefalonia in Greece, and Catania on the Sicilian island. With 14 decks, 1,557 cabins, and amenities like toiletries from The White Company, an en-suite bathroom, tea and coffee facilities, and breathtaking sea views, the voyage offered a truly immersive experience.

The ship’s newsletter, Horizon, kept us informed about onboard protocols, including the evening’s dress code. The central atrium served as the hub for accessing Azura’s various amenities, retail outlets, and hosting events like the black-tie ball. Interactions with other passengers, like the wise advice from a Scottish widow named Mary, added a personal touch to our journey.

Azura caters to families with age-specific children’s clubs, four pools, six whirlpool spas, a sauna, sports facilities, and multiple dining options. From the poolside pizzeria to fine dining venues like The Epicurean and Sindhu, the culinary offerings were diverse and satisfying. Excursions to destinations like Taranto, Corfu, and Kefalonia provided memorable experiences, from scenic walks to indulging in local cuisines and gelato.

Entertainment onboard was varied, from karaoke to game shows and theatrical performances that left us spellbound. The camaraderie, cultural immersion, and engaging activities made the cruise a delightful experience. If you’re a young person contemplating a cruise, I would encourage you to give it a try. My sister and I are already considering our next voyage, perhaps to the Caribbean. It’s the company you keep and the onboard experiences that truly make a difference.

P&O Cruises offers a seven-night fly-cruise on Azura starting from £949pp, including flights, children’s clubs, full-board meals, and entertainment. The itinerary covers ports in Taranto, Corfu, Kefalonia, and Catania. This experience has left me with a newfound appreciation for cruises and a desire to explore more of what the seas have to offer.
