An inquiry is scheduled to investigate the death of Alan Cameron, notorious for the killing of his ex-model fiancee, Heather Stacey, known as the “head-in-a-bag killer.” Cameron, 68, passed away in Saughton Prison in Edinburgh on November 1, 2022, due to an illness. he was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of murdering Heather Stacey, keeping her body hidden for a year, dismembering her, and discarding her body parts in June 2010.
Cameron’s relationship with Heather lasted less than six months before he murdered her in her Edinburgh flat in late 2007. He concealed her body in the flat for over a year, then disposed of the dismembered parts in bin liners near his workplace. The investigation into Cameron’s death will commence with a Preliminary Hearing on November 19 at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
The discovery of Heather’s head wrapped in a bin liner by dog walkers Anita Anderson and Jem Kitchen on Hogmanay morning in 2008 triggered a major murder inquiry. Additional body parts were found shortly thereafter, leading to Cameron’s arrest on January 8, 2009. The forthcoming inquiry will examine the circumstances and cause of Cameron’s death, evaluate if preventive measures could have been implemented, and aim to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
Procurator Fiscal Andy Shanks, overseeing fatalities investigations for COPFS, stated that a Fatal Accident Inquiry is mandatory as the death occurred while Cameron was in legal custody.
