The cryptocurrency, Moodeng, named after an adorable pygmy hippopotamus named Moo Deng, surged in value by almost a million percent following its viral popularity.
The memecoin gained traction after images of the two-month-old hippo captured hearts online when shared by the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. This surge in value allowed one savvy crypto trader to see an incredible return on their investment, demonstrating the potential for significant gains in the volatile world of cryptocurrency.
The sharp increase in Moodeng’s value coincides with what traders are dubbing the start of “meme season”, with various memecoins reaching all-time highs recently. Popcat, another memecoin inspired by a famous cat named Oatmeal, saw its value peak at $1.45 on Monday, up from less than 1 cent at the beginning of the year, as the memecoin craze continues to gain momentum.
Although Moodeng experienced fluctuations in its price towards the end of September, it rallied once again on Monday. Notably, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin sold 10 billion Moodeng tokens, worth over $800,000, and donated a part of the proceeds to an anti-airborne-disease charity. Buterin’s support of memecoins and charitable contributions have further propelled the popularity and value of Moodeng.
The overall cryptocurrency market has maintained a market capitalization ranging between $2 trillion and $2.25 trillion in the past month, though it has yet to reach the record high of close to $3 trillion seen in 2021. Notably, Dogecoin, the most valuable memecoin globally for over a decade, has also remained stable, trading at around $0.10 since early August.
