JD Vance Faces Backlash After Claiming He’d ‘Never’ Praise Obama Despite Past Op-Ed
JD Vance, the GOP vice presidential nominee, has faced online trolling after stating at a rally in Detroit, Michigan, that he would “never” praise Barack Obama, only to backtrack and say he “rarely” does so. This statement came as Vance compared Obama’s response to a natural disaster to the current administration’s efforts, which he has criticized. However, social media users were quick to point out that Vance had previously written a glowing op-ed about Obama in 2017.
In the op-ed, Vance praised Obama for his treatment of his family and his ability to exude hope despite his own difficult upbringing. Vance highlighted Obama’s example of a happy marriage and thriving children as something he aspired to, despite their differing political ideologies. Even though Vance acknowledged that he will miss Obama after he left office, critics pointed out his history of flip-flopping on his opinions, including those about his current running mate.
Despite Vance’s favourable comments about Obama, the former president is set to campaign alongside Kamala Harris in Pennsylvania. Vance’s criticism of the federal response to Hurricane Helene, compared to Obama’s handling of the Haiti earthquake in 2010, has also drawn attention. Vance called the delay in deploying soldiers to North Carolina after Helene as “disgraceful”, highlighting disparities in response times between disasters.
Vance and former President Donald Trump have both raised concerns about the government’s recovery efforts post-Helene, as the region braces for another significant hurricane. The Ohio Senator’s comments have sparked debate online, with many questioning his consistency in his statements and political views. Despite his past praise for Obama, Vance’s recent remarks have brought his credibility and reliability into question among critics and supporters alike.
