NASA’s Psyche spacecraft has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by receiving a laser signal from a distance of about 290 million miles away, setting a new record that could revolutionise our exploration of the solar system. This achievement was made possible by NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications technology demonstration, which is investigating the feasibility of using lasers to transmit messages deep into space. Unlike traditional radio frequencies, lasers have the capability to transmit data at rates up to 100 times faster, enabling the transmission of more complex and high-definition data. However, laser communication requires significantly greater precision to function effectively.
The laser signal was transmitted to the Psyche spacecraft, which was launched in October 2023. While its primary mission is to study an asteroid of the same name, the spacecraft also carries NASA’s experiment to test laser communication in space. The distance covered by the signal, equivalent to approximately 460 million kilometres, is comparable to the distance between Earth and Mars at their farthest points. NASA envisions that this laser technology can enhance future crewed missions to Mars and other exploration missions within our solar system, marking a major breakthrough in space communication capabilities.
Meera Srinivasan, the project’s operations lead at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, highlighted the significance of the milestone, stating, “Laser communication requires a very high level of precision, and before we launched with Psyche, we didn’t know how much performance degradation we would see at our farthest distances. Now the techniques we use to track and point have been verified, confirming that optical communications can be a robust and transformative way to explore the solar system.” NASA administrator Bill Nelson also congratulated the team involved, emphasising that this achievement will revolutionise our approach to solar system exploration.
NASA’s accomplishments in laser communication technology have been impressive, with previous breakthroughs including a successful transmission from 10 million miles away and the first ultra-high-definition video transmitted from space. As the distance between the spacecraft and Earth increases, the speed of the connection naturally decreases. For instance, when the spacecraft was 33 million miles away, it could receive data at a maximum rate of 267 megabits per second, but as the latest record-breaking transmission demonstrated, speeds reached only 8.3 megabits per second during the summer.
The successful test of laser communication between NASA’s ground station and the Psyche spacecraft signifies a significant step forward in space communication technology, opening up new possibilities for enhancing future space exploration missions within our solar system.
