Specifically in Manhattan, around one-third of those convicted faced a prison sentence.
Donald Trump was convicted by a Manhattan jury in May on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records. This was related to a scheme aimed at silencing adult film star Stormy Daniels, whose revelations could have had an impact on Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Set for sentencing on November 26 by Judge Juan Merchan in Manhattan criminal court, Trump potentially faces several years in jail. However, there is also the possibility of probation, community service, a fine, or a combination of these penalties.
Should Trump be successful in the upcoming election, he would likely avoid jail time for the next four years, potentially leading to a postponement of his sentencing. On the other hand, if he is not re-elected, his legal team may seek a lenient sentence citing his age of 78 and his status as a first-time, non-violent offender.
Meanwhile, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg could argue for jail time for Trump by pointing to his other legal issues, including charges in Washington, DC, and Fulton County, Georgia, related to the 2020 election. In the nation’s capital, Trump is facing accusations of attempting to overturn the election results, while in Georgia, along with several allies, he is accused of trying to undermine the state’s election outcome.
In all these cases, Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing. The Independent has reached out to both the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and Trump’s campaign for comment on the matter.
