A new Netflix series delves into the world of Japanese professional wrestling, focusing on women’s ambitions and aspirations. Titled “The Queen of Villains,” the series offers a unique take on a coming-of-age story set in the intense realm of body-slamming and arm-twisting matches.
The storyline follows the life of Dump Matsumoto, a real-life wrestling icon from the 1980s who overcame a tumultuous upbringing to carve a space for herself in the wrestling world. Matsumoto’s character is portrayed as a fierce and campy villain, also known as a “heel” in wrestling jargon, sporting dramatic makeup and an intimidating presence. Despite her onstage persona, Matsumoto was seen as a symbol of strong and unapologetic womanhood.
The series explores Matsumoto’s complex relationship with Chigusa Nagayo, a member of the popular Crush Gals wrestling tag team. Nagayo, who served as a mentor and choreographer for the series’ wrestling scenes, shares a deep friendship with Matsumoto, leading to memorable matches that are still talked about in the wrestling community.
Actresses in the series underwent rigorous training for two years to authentically portray the physical demands of professional wrestling. From gaining weight and muscle to mastering intricate wrestling moves like the “giant swing” and “flying knee kick,” the actors devoted themselves to embodying the essence of the sport. Each fight scene was meticulously choreographed to balance realism with safety, reflecting the dedication required in professional wrestling.
Reflecting on her role as Matsumoto, actress Yuriyan Retriever expressed the emotional toll of embracing a character despised by the nation.
