The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently conducting an investigation into complaints regarding Enel X Way JuiceBox residential electric vehicle chargers following reports of fires and other electrical issues. The NHTSA revealed that the Office of Defects Investigation has received six complaints alleging failures of Enel X Way’s JuiceBox Level 2 residential EV charger. One individual reported that charging their vehicle with a JuiceBox resulted in an explosion in their garage, causing a fire that led to the complete loss of their home. Another complaint involved a car catching fire in the driveway while being charged with a JuiceBox. Additionally, four complaints detailed electrical malfunctions that tripped circuit breakers and disrupted electric vehicle charge cycles.
The ODI also stated that charger owners were informed earlier in the month that Enel X Way North America would be discontinuing operations in the U.S. and Canada. This decision could have implications for the charging app and supporting software, according to the ODI. In a statement on its website, the company mentioned that it was exiting the North American market due to shifting market conditions and the absence of a retail electricity customer base in the region.
In response to these incidents, the ODI has initiated a preliminary evaluation to examine the extent, frequency, and safety implications of the charger-related issues. This evaluation will also consider safety concerns linked to the app and supporting software. The investigation remains ongoing to ensure the safety and reliability of electric vehicle chargers in residential settings.
