The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to two researchers who have been instrumental in laying the groundwork for the artificial intelligence technology that permeates our lives today. John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton have both made significant contributions to machine learning techniques that have powered products like ChatGPT.
Professor Hinton, in particular, has not only contributed to advancing AI technology but has also been vocal about the potential risks associated with it. Last year, he left Google after a decade to freely express his concerns about the “existential risk” that AI could pose to humanity.
