Olympic hero Duncan Scott leads swimmers to rapturous campus welcome after gold medal
Olympic champion Duncan Scott and seven other Stirling University swimmers received a heartwarming welcome as they returned to the campus after their outstanding performance at the Paris Olympics.
The athletes, who won three medals at the games, were greeted with cheers and applause from students, staff, alumni, and the public. The group, which included the largest Stirling contingent to compete at a single games, was honoured with a guard of honour and a surprise celebratory cake to mark their achievements.
During the Olympics in Paris, Duncan Scott secured a gold and silver medal, making him Scotland’s most decorated Olympian. Another Stirling swimmer, Jack McMillan, also clinched a gold medal. The team was completed by Kathleen Dawson, Keanna MacInnes, Katie Shanahan, Angharad Evans, Lucy Hope, and Zimbabwean athlete Paige van der Westhuizen.
Local schoolchildren from a primary school in the area had the chance to meet the athletes and witness their medals up close, adding to the celebratory atmosphere. The swimmers are all part of Stirling University’s high-performance swim programme, providing them with top-notch coaching, facilities, mentoring, and access to sports research innovations.
David Bond, the Head of Performance Sport at the University of Stirling, expressed his delight at the community coming together to celebrate the Olympians’ success.
