Online scammers con elderly couple out of $3 million in gold bars – that only ended with an FBI sting

Online fraudsters managed to scam an elderly couple from Oregon out of over $3 million in gold bars through a sophisticated months-long scheme that came to a dramatic end with an FBI sting operation. The elaborate scam involved secret passwords, an undercover exchange, and decoy bullion parcels. The couple fell victim to the fraud, with the final shipment of gold being pivotal in exposing one alleged member of the fraud ring.

The alleged courier, 27-year-old Biao Lin, has been charged with three federal counts of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. Lin claimed he was unknowingly recruited for the task by a stranger he met at a public library in New York. The scheme kicked off on June 10 when the elderly woman, referred to as “Adult Victim 1,” tried to access her Vanguard investment accounts but was locked out after receiving false notifications about her account being hacked.

The fraudsters posed as Vanguard and Social Security officials, instructing the elderly woman to transfer her funds into gold bars stored at US Bank for safety. The victims were coerced into multiple gold purchases throughout the summer, with the scammers going to great lengths to maintain their charade. The FBI nearly intervened at one point, but the victims were convinced to continue by the scammers.

The climax of the scam unfolded in early October when the couple’s son alerted the FBI about the fraud after being informed about the ongoing gold transactions. Setting up a trap for the alleged fraudster, agents coached the victims to cooperate with the scammers’ instructions for a gold handoff, which led to the arrest of Lin during the exchange. Lin claimed he was coerced into the task and was in possession of cash thought to be payment for the operation.

The intricate web of deception orchestrated by the fraud ring highlights the vulnerability of elderly individuals to financial scams. The victims, despite initial suspicions, became entangled in the elaborate scheme that ultimately led to significant financial losses. The FBI’s successful intervention served as a crucial turning point in putting an end to the fraudulent activities targeting the elderly couple. Lin faces the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence if convicted on the charges.
