A dazzling and rare light display recently mesmerized viewers across Scotland, leaving many in awe and curiosity. The phenomenon dubbed “Steve” illuminated the skies with purple and green ribbons of light, captivating stargazers in various parts of Scotland and north-east England. The extraordinary glow sparked comparisons to aurora displays like the Northern Lights, yet scientists assert that Steve and the traditional auroras are distinct phenomena.
Unlike the famous Northern Lights, Steve is a unique spectacle that has its origins rooted in a different scientific process. Named after a scene in the animated movie “Over the Hedge,” where characters creatively name an extraordinary hedge “Steve,” this celestial occurrence stands for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. Scientists have only begun investigating Steve since 2016, leading to limited knowledge about its formation and appearance.
The enigmatic display of Steve is believed to be caused by a rapid flow of hot particles known as a sub-auroral ion drift (SAID). This stream generates a mesmerising light show that typically lasts anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour before disappearing. Despite often appearing alongside the Northern Lights, Steve is fundamentally different in nature and appearance.
While the Northern Lights result from solar particles interacting with Earth’s atmosphere, creating colourful displays of light, Steve emerges from the heating of gas in the upper atmosphere due to solar emissions. Unlike the characteristic green ovals of the Northern Lights, Steve manifests as a slender arc of purple light stretching from East to West, occasionally accompanied by vertical green stripes resembling a picket fence. Steve’s unpredictability and brief duration contribute to its rarity, with sightings sporadically occurring.
Last observed in the UK in November 2023, Steve has also made appearances in Canada, New Zealand, and northern states in America, according to NASA. The captivating and elusive nature of Steve continues to intrigue scientists and sky gazers alike as they await its next ethereal manifestation in the night skies.
