Housing Minister Paul Mclennan is being urged to suspend legislation that has contributed to exacerbating the housing crisis in West Lothian, with the SNP characterising the situation, especially the substantial expenditure on B&B accommodation, as self-inflicted. Councillor Robert de Bold, the housing spokesman, highlighted the significant challenges that the council and residents are currently experiencing.
The Housing Services PDSP has put forth a Housing Emergency Action Plan, outlining an eight-point proposal to present to Minister Paul McLennan. The plan includes requests for increased funding from the Scottish Government, the reversal of budget cuts for affordable housing programmes, and suspension of certain regulations during the housing emergency.
Furthermore, the plan seeks to address delays by energy suppliers in updating meters to expedite bringing empty homes back to the market for rental. The Council aims to reinstate criteria, such as local connection, for housing eligibility, ensuring a more targeted approach to housing allocation in West Lothian.
In response to questions regarding the Scottish Government’s declaration of a housing emergency, the Housing Strategy and Development Manager, Marjory Mackie, stated that West Lothian had been promised additional funding for acquiring former council homes for new housing projects. Councillor Robert De Bold criticised the administration for not investing adequately in building housing stock over the years, contributing to the current crisis.
