Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, aged 91, has sparked concerns about his whereabouts as he has been absent from public view for an extended period. However, officials have clarified that he is currently in Europe on a visit and is reportedly in good health.
The last public appearance of President Biya was noted at the China-Africa summit held in Beijing approximately a month ago. Speculations arose as he did not make expected appearances at key events such as the United Nations General Assembly and the International Organization of La Francophonie summit in France.
Despite being known to frequently travel to Europe for medical reasons, little information has been shared regarding his current health status. Communications Minister Rene Sadi rejected the rumours surrounding Biya’s health, labelling them as unfounded and based on speculation.
As one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, President Paul Biya has been in power since 1982, making him the only leader known to many in Cameroon since the country gained independence in 1960. Throughout his tenure, his administration has faced criticism from human rights groups for alleged tactics of intimidation and persecution targeting political opponents.
In addition to internal challenges, such as the secessionist movement in the country’s English-speaking regions and the threat of Boko Haram violence from neighbouring Nigeria, President Biya’s absence has raised concerns and speculation about the future political landscape in Cameroon.
Authorities have assured the public that President Biya is expected to return to Cameroon in the coming days, without specifying the exact details of his trip or the date of his return.
