400,000 people trapped in the hell of northern Gaza, according to UN reports, as the death toll surpasses 42,000. The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, has cautioned that tens of thousands of individuals have no place to go despite evacuation orders issued by the Israeli army. Israeli forces continue their raid on the Jabalia refugee camp, now in its fifth day, with the aim of preventing further attacks by Hamas fighters and disrupting their regrouping efforts.
Mr. Lazzarini expressed on social media platform X (previously Twitter) that there seems to be no relief for at least 400,000 trapped individuals in Gaza, many of whom are hesitant to leave as they are aware that nowhere in Gaza is considered safe. The Gaza health ministry revealed that three hospitals in northern Gaza have been instructed to evacuate, leaving numerous patients and medical staff stranded inside. Palestinian medics stated that several individuals lost their lives in Israeli airstrikes across Gaza on Wednesday.
The death toll in Gaza has climbed above 42,000, with up to 51,000 children potentially unaccompanied or separated from their parents in the besieged enclave, as highlighted by the International Rescue Committee. The frequent evacuation orders, detentions, and attacks have led to more families being separated, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. UNRWA facilities and services are now being forced to close for the first time since the conflict began, resulting in a scarcity of basic supplies and a resurgence of hunger in northern Gaza.
This recent incursion into Jabalia and its refugee camp marks the third occasion in the past year that Israeli forces have entered the area, following the displacement of tens of thousands of individuals during the last operation in May. The Israeli military’s campaign in Gaza was triggered by a Hamas attack inside Israel on 7th October, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and 250 individuals being held hostage. Israel’s retaliation has displaced 1.9 million out of Gaza’s 2.3 million population, experiencing multiple displacements alongside the 42,000 casualties. The air and ground operations have left widespread devastation in their wake.
The Gaza Health Ministry reported the recovery of 40 bodies from Jabaliya between Sunday and Tuesday, with an additional 14 bodies found in communities further north. Tragically, further casualties have been reported, but the ongoing hostilities are hindering medics from retrieving the bodies. An airstrike in Jabaliya early Wednesday claimed the lives of at least nine people, including women and children, as confirmed by Al-Ahly Hospital. Meanwhile, strikes in central Gaza led to the deaths of another nine individuals, including children, according to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah.
