Gavin and Stacey fans are feeling emotional as filming wraps up for the final time | The Independent
Fans of the beloved show Gavin and Stacey are experiencing a wave of emotions as filming for the last ever episode has officially concluded, as confirmed by the BBC. The hit sitcom, which originally aired from 2007 to 2010, will make its anticipated return on Christmas Day. James Corden had previously teased fans with a behind-the-scenes image on the first day of filming in September.
In a heartfelt post on Twitter, the BBC shared the news by stating, “And that’s a wrap… for the last time ever.” The accompanying image featured a clapperboard with the words, “Gavin & Stacey: The Finale”. Filming was completed in the Welsh town of Barry, with co-creator and star Ruth Jones bidding farewell to fans who gathered on Trinity Street in September. Addressing the crowd, the 58-year-old Jones expressed gratitude to the loyal fans and hinted at surprises in store for the Christmas finale.
The announcement of the final filming left fans deeply moved, with many taking to social media to share their emotions. One fan tweeted, “So excited I could combust,” while another wrote, “Yeah, heart already shattered.” A third fan said, “Tears in my eyes.”
Gavin And Stacey’s one-off festive episode in 2019 left viewers on a cliffhanger when Ruth Jones’s character Nessa proposed to Neil “Smithy” Smith, played by Corden. The return of Jones and Corden as creators and lead actors was officially confirmed in May, with a teaser script titled “Gavin And Stacey: The Finale”.
The sitcom follows the story of a young couple, Gavin and Stacey, played by Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, as they navigate a long-distance relationship between Essex and Wales. The stellar cast includes Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman as Gavin’s parents, and Melanie Walters as Stacey’s mother, with Rob Brydon as Uncle Bryn.
The 2019 Christmas special received high praise, earning the highest overnight Christmas ratings in 12 years with an average audience of 11.6 million viewers. By the new year, the episode had been watched by 17.1 million people, making it the most-watched scripted programme of the decade at the time.
The upcoming festive final episode of Gavin And Stacey is eagerly anticipated and will be available to viewers on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on December 25.
