Billie Piper Sheds Light on Survivors’ Stories of Coercive Control in Powerful New Film
Billie Piper has taken on the task of retelling the harrowing stories of survivors of domestic abuse in a poignant new film. The Independent’s Brick By Brick campaign alongside Refuge has been advocating for raising £300,000 to establish a safe haven for women fleeing abusive partners. With £130,000 already raised, Piper’s involvement in the Refuge’s short film “Make the World a Refuge” aims to highlight the different forms of domestic abuse, including coercive control, technological and financial abuse, in addition to physical violence.
In the film, Piper brings to life real-life accounts of survivors, showcasing the devastating impact of abuse on individuals. From trackers hidden inside a child’s beloved teddy bear to financial monitoring and physical violence leaving a woman fearing for her pregnancy, the film sheds light on the complex and insidious nature of domestic abuse. Speaking at the campaign video launch event, Piper revealed that she was inspired to create the film after learning about a friend going through a challenging period. Piper highlighted the need for continued education on coercive control, stressing the importance of recognising and addressing this form of abuse.

Despite the staggering statistics, there remains a national shortage of safe spaces for women seeking refuge from abuse, leading to women being turned away from shelters every two hours. The Brick By Brick campaign has garnered support from high-profile figures like Dame Helen Mirren, Dame Joanna Lumley, and Sir Patrick Stewart, urging donations to provide a secure sanctuary for abuse victims.
