Police have confiscated a kilo of “import purity” cocaine that was en route to the UK streets following a well-executed sting operation. The drug, classified as a class A substance, was found in the van of Alister Wright, who was operating a legitimate courier business and claims he was unaware of the package’s contents. Craig Robertson was also apprehended by officers when he arrived to collect the drugs on behalf of higher-ups in the criminal network.
The events unfolded at the Travelodge car park at Rotary Way, near Gosforth Park, where Wright’s white Peugeot van was intercepted by plain-clothed officers as he attempted to take the package from the vehicle. A thorough search revealed a kilo block of cocaine meticulously wrapped in layers of fabric, plastic, and rubber to conceal its true nature. The substance was described as “import purity,” indicating its potent form.
During the operation, Robertson was observed behaving suspiciously in a black VW Golf and was later arrested at a nearby pub. The individuals involved in orchestrating the drug delivery had employed sophisticated tactics such as “caller line ID spoofing” and specialised sim cards to evade detection. Robertson, with a history of 30 previous convictions, admitted to his involvement in the supply of cocaine and was subsequently sentenced to five years and two months in prison.
In contrast, Wright, also with 30 previous convictions, pleaded guilty to participating in criminal activities unknowingly and received a suspended sentence of 18 months. The court heard that Wright claimed he thought he was transporting a non-illegal item and was paid £300 for his role in the operation. Both defendants were represented by their respective legal teams, highlighting the complexities of criminal networks and the challenges of prosecuting those at the top of the hierarchy.
As the case concluded, concerns were raised about the impact of lengthy legal proceedings on the defendants, particularly on Wright’s health. The delays in the legal process underscored the need for timely resolutions in such cases to mitigate their effects on all parties involved.
