A new windfarm project in Kinross-shire is expected to bring about significant economic advantages to the region, including the creation of approximately 66 jobs. The proposed development, consisting of eight turbines situated north of Carnbo, is anticipated to provide substantial commercial benefits during both construction and operation, according to renewable energy developers Galileo.
Analyses indicate an estimated total cost of the windfarm of up to £65.4 million, with a generating capacity of around 49.6MW, over its projected operational lifespan of 40 years. Businesses in Perth and Kinross are encouraged to express their interest in potential commercial opportunities that may arise if the project receives approval, with a supplier registration platform already accessible.
Senior project manager at Galileo, Jason Morin, emphasised the positive impact of the windfarm, stating, “During operation, it has been estimated that up to 66 jobs will be created locally, with £600k per annum generated in business rates.” Aside from job creation, an approximate £10 million community wealth fund is planned to be allocated for use by local communities.
Engagement with local communities has driven a commitment to utilise local businesses and contractors for all aspects of the windfarm development. Independent assessments reveal that approximately £33.7 million will be injected into the Scottish economy during the windfarm’s development and construction phase, with £9.1 million directly impacting Perth and Kinross.
A planning application for the Craighead Wind Farm was lodged with Perth and Kinross Council in August 2024. Vicki Unite, chief executive of Perthshire Chamber of Commerce, expressed her support for the initiative, highlighting the opportunities it presents for local businesses to engage and benefit. She underscored the potential for renewable energy ventures to stimulate investment, create jobs, enhance workforce skills, and foster sustainable economic growth.
Should the project move forward, Galileo’s pledge to prioritise local suppliers and contractors has been welcomed by stakeholders. The Chamber of Commerce anticipates collaborating with the company to maximise local supply chain benefits post-approval.
