Sean “Diddy” Combs, the hip-hop mogul currently in jail, is seeking a trial on sex trafficking charges next spring, according to his lawyers. In a joint letter to a judge, they mentioned Combs’ preference for a trial in April or May and informed the court about the expected discussion at a hearing in Manhattan federal court.
Prosecutors stated they are prepared for the trial but did not specify their preferred timing. Combs, aged 54, has been in custody since his arrest on September 16 on charges alleging physical and sexual abuse of women over several years. He has pleaded not guilty to the accusations.
The indictment claims that Combs used coercion and abuse with the help of associates and employees, resorting to blackmail and violent acts like kidnapping, arson, and physical assaults to silence his victims. His lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, argues that prosecutors are attempting to criminalise consensual sexual activities. Agnifilo stated that Combs plans to clear his name during the trial.
The letter submitted to Judge Arun Subramanian, expected to oversee the trial, did not address the possibility of continued detention without bail for Combs. Earlier, two judges had ruled that no bail conditions could adequately ensure the community’s safety if Combs were to be released.
Recently, Combs’ lawyers filed a request with the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan, seeking to reverse the detention orders and allow his release pending the trial. Judge Andrew L. Carter Jr., who had initially declined bail, was later removed from the case. Combs’ lawyers argued that the proposed $50 million bail package, including home detention, was rejected based on speculative reasons.
Prosecutors revealed that they have started sharing evidence with the defence team, including substantial amounts of electronically stored information from Combs and others. The evidence includes search warrants, reports on iCloud accounts, and data from over 40 devices and five other iCloud accounts belonging to Combs.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Combs remains determined to face his accusers and prove his innocence. The upcoming trial is anticipated to shed more light on the allegations and the evidence presented by both sides as the case progresses through the judicial system.
