Healthcare Workers in England at Risk of Long Covid Symptoms
A recent study conducted by scientists at King’s College London has revealed alarming statistics regarding Long Covid symptoms among healthcare workers in England. The 32-month study surveyed over 5,000 medical professionals, indicating that 33.6% of them showed signs consistent with Long Covid. The research aimed to identify individuals more prone to developing the condition, with results showing that direct contact with Covid patients posed a significant risk factor for healthcare workers.
The study highlighted that women, individuals aged between 51 and 60, as well as those with pre-existing respiratory or mental health conditions, faced a higher risk of Long Covid symptoms. However, despite the prevalence of symptoms, only 7.4% of those surveyed had been officially diagnosed with Long Covid, suggesting that many cases may be going undetected. Lead author Dr. Danielle Lamb stressed the importance of recognising the ongoing threat of Covid-19 and the impact it has on healthcare workers, particularly older staff and those with existing health conditions.
While most people recover from Covid within days, some continue to experience prolonged symptoms, known as Long Covid or post-Covid syndrome (PCS). Approximately 187,000 people in Scotland self-reported Long Covid in 2023. Symptoms can include extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, brain fog, heart palpitations, loss of smell, chest pain, depression, tinnitus, and more. The study’s authors urge for urgent improvements in diagnosing and supporting those with Long Covid in the healthcare sector.
The findings come after intense pressure on the NHS during the peak of the pandemic, where some healthcare workers struggled to access adequate personal protective equipment. Dr. Sharon Stevelink, a co-author of the study, stressed the need to address both the physiological and psychosocial aspects of Long Covid to ensure affected individuals receive proper care and support.
The study underscores the complex challenges faced by healthcare workers dealing with Long Covid symptoms and calls for increased understanding and support within the healthcare sector to address this growing concern.
