Loughborough Lightning welcomes back NRLW star Fran Goldthorp, potentially boosting England’s Red Roses as they aim for World Cup success on home soil. Goldthorp, who spent two seasons with the North Queensland Cowboys in Australia’s NRL, has returned to Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR) club Loughborough Lightning.
The 21-year-old versatile player, capable of featuring at centre, on the wing, or at full-back, is reportedly under the scrutiny of England head coach John Mitchell. While England’s primary back three of Ellie Kildunne, Jess Breach, and Abby Dow is established, Mitchell seeks to strengthen the squad’s depth. Despite giving debuts to players like Bo Westcombe-Evans, Mitchell rates Exeter wing Katie Buchanan highly. However, Goldthorp, with experience in both rugby league and rugby union, presents significant potential for England.
Having represented her country in rugby league games on eight occasions, Goldthorp started her career with Leeds Rhinos at just 16 years old. She was named NRLW rookie of the year following her debut season with the Cowboys in Townsville. Moreover, during her initial spell with Loughborough, Goldthorp made 20 appearances for the club and earned accolades with England Under-20.
Expressing her excitement about reuniting with Lightning, Fran Goldthorp stated, “I’m really excited to be back with Lightning after a few years away. It was at Loughborough where my rugby union journey started, and I am looking forward to working hard with the team to see what we can achieve together this season.” She also highlighted the progress Lightning has made and the quality of talent within the team, especially with several internationals representing WXV.
In anticipation of upcoming competitive seasons, Goldthorp is eager to contribute on and off the pitch towards achieving collective goals. She looks forward to playing at the cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens, recognizing it as a fantastic venue for home matches. With the fiercely competitive PWR season ahead, followed by the 2025 Six Nations and a home World Cup, Goldthorp is poised for an exciting year in women’s rugby.
