Nobel Prize in chemistry awarded to David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper for work on proteins

David Baker, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper have been awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry for their groundbreaking work on proteins. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences recognised their significant contributions to the field, particularly in predicting and designing the structure of proteins – the fundamental building blocks of life.

Heiner Linke, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, highlighted the trio’s achievement in bridging the gap between amino acid sequences and protein structures, a challenge that had persisted in chemistry and biochemistry for decades. Baker, based at the University of Washington in Seattle, spearheaded the design of novel proteins with diverse applications, such as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nanomaterials, and sensors.

Hassabis and Jumper, both affiliated with Google Deepmind in London, developed an artificial intelligence model capable of predicting the structure of nearly all identified proteins, numbering over 200 million. Their innovation revolutionised the ability to forecast the complex 3D arrangements of proteins, fulfilling a long-standing scientific aspiration.

Linke emphasised that Hassabis and Jumper achieved a major breakthrough in cracking the code for protein structures through the strategic application of artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, Baker’s computational tools enabled the design of innovative proteins with unique shapes and functions, unleashing endless possibilities for scientific advancements and societal benefits.

The chemistry Nobel Prize recipients join a prestigious roster of laureates, with last year’s award focusing on quantum dots and their wide-ranging applications. The Nobel Committee’s recognition of Baker, Hassabis, and Jumper highlights the significant strides made in understanding and utilising proteins, paving the way for transformative discoveries in various fields.
