Saoirse Ronan has opened up about a significant role she missed out on that continues to linger in her mind, despite decades having passed since the audition. The 30-year-old actress, known for her roles in “Atonement” and “The Lovely Bones,” revealed that there was one particular major franchise she had hoped to be a part of at the beginning of her career.
In a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Ronan shared that she had auditioned for the role of Luna Lovegood in the “Harry Potter” series when she was younger. She mentioned that numerous Irish actors, including herself, went up for the part, ultimately taken by Evanna Lynch. Reflecting on the experience, Ronan expressed, “There’s things that you’ll pass on and then they come out, and you think, ‘Oh God, that was a misstep on my part.’”
Despite not landing the role, Ronan fondly remembered getting to read a scene from “Harry Potter” during the audition process, describing it as “the coolest thing ever.” Evanna Lynch went on to portray Luna Lovegood in multiple “Harry Potter” films, becoming a fan-favourite character in the franchise.
On the career front, while Ronan has been nominated for several Academy Awards, winning still eludes her. This year, she is being considered for both lead and supporting actress nominations for her roles in “Blitz” and “The Outrun.” Ronan shared with The Independent, “I don’t think it’s necessarily something that I would have had the strength of character to take on years before.”
Reflecting on her journey as an actress, Ronan expressed that she now feels prepared to tackle complex and challenging roles, thanks to feeling content and settled in her personal and professional life. She spoke about embracing characters that are flawed and disconnected, noting her readiness to explore the unknown aspects of a role.
The actress’s revelation about missing out on the “Harry Potter” role sheds light on the behind-the-scenes experiences and challenges faced by actors in the competitive and unpredictable world of filmmaking. Ronan’s candid reflections offer a glimpse into the resilience and growth she has experienced throughout her career, providing an inspiring perspective for aspiring actors and fans alike.
