Residents in Scotland are outraged as bold fly-tippers continue to illegally dump rubbish on the streets near the “doomed” estate of Ferguslie Park. A recent incident saw piles of waste, including timber, plumbing equipment, mattresses, and a kitchen sink, left near St Mirren’s SMiSA stadium. Local residents in Ferguslie Park have reached a tipping point and are considering taking action to protect their community from those who persist in blighting the area.
The Chair of Ferguslie Community Council, Terry McTernan, expressed the community’s frustration, stating that there are discussions about potential public protests or setting up overnight watch points manned by volunteers to show their resolve against such unacceptable behaviour. Despite efforts to improve the area’s image, incidents like these tarnish the community’s hard work and give visitors a negative impression.
Over the years, local volunteers have worked tirelessly to enhance the local environment, but commercial waste is still being unlawfully dumped in the area. With the Tannahill estate undergoing demolition and being used as a waste disposal area, fly-tippers have moved on to other locations, such as Craigielea Drive and Duns Avenue. Renfrewshire Council’s environmental taskforce has removed the dumped waste and is conducting a joint investigation with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) to identify and hold those responsible to account.
A council spokesperson emphasised that fly-tipping is illegal, unsightly, and harmful to the environment, with taxpayers and businesses bearing the cost of cleanup. The environmental taskforce is actively patrolling hot spot areas and urges the public to report instances of fly-tipping with any evidence they may have. Residents are encouraged to work together with the council to combat fly-tipping and maintain a cleaner local environment.
