The surprising 1980s anthem the dying choose to listen to in their final moments

New Study Reveals 1980s Anthem Choices of Terminally Ill Individuals

A recent study conducted by the charity Marie Curie has uncovered the favourite songs chosen by terminally ill individuals to accompany them during their last moments. The survey, which included responses from one thousand people who had experienced end-of-life care for their loved ones, aimed to identify the most popular tracks among the terminally ill.

Surprisingly, classics such as “Over The Rainbow” by Judy Garland and Whitney Houston’s rendition of “I Will Always Love You” ranked among the top 10 songs on the list. Notably, Cyndi Lauper’s empowering 1980s hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” also made the cut, offering a feminist anthem for those facing their final moments.

According to the findings, music plays a crucial role in end-of-life care, with 84% of respondents agreeing that music helped relax and calm their loved ones. Over 60% of participants stated that music aided in easing anxiety and emotional distress as their loved ones approached the end of their lives.

Dr Tracey McConnell, a music therapy expert and honorary senior research fellow at Queen’s University Belfast, highlighted the significance of music in providing comfort and a means of expression for individuals facing terminal illness. She emphasised that music therapy can help individuals articulate their emotions and improve their overall well-being, regardless of their health status.

In addition to revealing the popular song choices, Marie Curie also published a report on people’s preferences for experiencing their final months, weeks, and days. The report, based on the opinions of 10,500 adults, highlighted that 83% of respondents prioritised quality of life over the length of life when seriously ill. The majority expressed a desire to be pain-free in their last days, with over half preferring to die at home.

Despite these preferences, the report underscored a stark reality where a significant number of individuals in England and Wales continue to experience severe pain in the final stages of life. Marie Curie nurse Jan Palmer stressed the importance of meeting the basic needs of dying individuals, including pain management, dignity, and the presence of loved ones.

The top 10 songs identified in the study included classics by renowned artists such as Frank Sinatra, Tina Turner, Louis Armstrong, and The Beatles. These songs have provided comfort and solace to terminally ill individuals, illustrating the profound impact of music in end-of-life care.

As the research sheds light on the preferences and needs of those facing terminal illness, it serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of compassionate and comprehensive palliative and end-of-life care for all individuals, regardless of their circumstances.
