The White House has made a significant move by creating an official account on Reddit to disseminate urgent information regarding the US government’s response to Hurricane Milton. The debut post from the u/whitehouse account displayed President Joe Biden leading a briefing on Hurricane Milton preparation alongside the response to Hurricane Helene. Following posts have provided updates on the White House’s actions concerning Hurricane Helene in Georgia and North Carolina.
Expressing enthusiasm about the new initiative, White House Deputy Platforms Director Megan Coyne stated, “As a big Reddit fan, I’m so excited we launched a White House account on the platform today. Meeting more people where they are to get out critical information about the work this Administration is doing.” Hurricane Helene recently ravaged the Southeastern United States, causing extensive havoc across multiple states, with over 230 reported deaths and several individuals still unaccounted for. This storm marked the deadliest one to impact the US since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with predictions suggesting that Hurricane Milton could surpass the destructive force of Hurricane Helene.
Forecasts estimate Hurricane Milton, currently classified as a Category 5 hurricane, to generate sustained winds of approximately 165mph (266kph) upon its arrival on the western coast of Florida on Wednesday. The accompanying storm surge is set to bring substantial swells that have prompted the evacuation of thousands of residents. While the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is diligently preparing for Hurricane Milton’s impact, it is also contending with misinformation circulating about Hurricane Helene. False claims have emerged, such as suggestions that receiving government relief funds could lead to land confiscation and baseless rumours alleging FEMA’s obstruction of supplies and rescue operations.
In response to these challenges, the White House disclosed that the new Reddit account intends to counter misinformation in the upcoming days. White House Director of Digital Strategy Christian Tom affirmed, “The White House digital team is activating a presence on Reddit as part of our strategy around hurricane response and preparedness – calling out misinformation and providing resources to those who need it.”
