Valencia fans have continued to voice their discontent with owner Peter Lim, further amplified by a recent incident involving a Spanish couple detained in Singapore for criticising the billionaire. Lim, a Singaporean billionaire who acquired the Spanish football club in 2014, has faced ongoing protests and backlash from the Valencia faithful.
The issue came to the forefront when Valencia supporters Dani Cuesta and Mireia Saez were stopped from leaving Singapore after sharing photos on social media denouncing Lim. The couple had displayed a banner outside Lim’s residence, prompting their detainment under Singapore’s strict public assembly regulations. The exact charges they face remain unclear.
Pilar Bernabe, the Spanish government’s delegate in the Valencia region, provided assurance of efforts to resolve the situation swiftly. Protest actions against Lim have become a regular occurrence at Valencia matches, often featuring banners with messages like “Lim go home”.
Hailing from a humble background as the son of a fishmonger, Lim’s business journey led him from studying in Australia to becoming a successful stockbroker in the 1980s. While unsuccessful in prior bids to invest in Liverpool, Rangers, and Atletico Madrid, Lim completed the acquisition of Valencia in 2014. He later joined forces with Gary Neville in Salford City.
Upon taking control of Valencia, Lim made significant personnel changes, including appointing Nuno Espirito Santo as head coach. Nuno’s association with agent Jorge Mendes, reportedly close to Lim, drew criticism from some fans. Subsequent managerial appointments, such as Neville, did not yield successful results for the club on the pitch.
Valencia’s performance has wavered under Lim’s ownership, transitioning from top-four finishes to mid-table mediocrity in recent seasons. Despite strides in debt reduction from previous ownership, the long-stalled Nou Mestalla stadium project remains unresolved.
In response to the recent events in Singapore, Valencia CF issued a statement expressing hopes for a swift and positive resolution for the detained fans. The club, along with La Liga, is actively engaged with the Spanish embassy in Singapore to provide necessary support and guidance to Cuesta and Saez.
